The Dance Review - David Truman reports on the Blackpool Junior Festival 2024 Solo Championships

Easter is a time for families to get together in celebration, however for dancers under the age of sixteen it also means a pilgrimage to the British Open Junior Dance Festival and of course this means walking through those famous main doors to the Winter Gardens and for that magical experience that only dancers can explain as they walk through the glass roofed foyer towards the Empress Ballroom.

Dancers can now turn right and decent down those very historic stairs or turn left and use the lift or escalator to the fabulous Conference Centre and be able to wander freely between the two as they wish.

Blackpool Entertainment Company Limited have great vision for event development as they continue to create a mixture of wonderful tradition and nostalgia, whilst introducing and combining it with very exciting new ideas and the inclusion of modern technology, whilst maintaining the all important values that makes a Blackpool Dance Festival.

One such inclusion is the new Conference Centre which once again hosted the British Open Solo competitions and for the very first time the British Open Solo Championships were presented for the Under 10, Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 age groups, which are run under the rules of the British Dance Council.

The Conference Centre is a terrific room with amazing acoustics and of course one can dance on a great dance floor just as the dancers can in the Empress Ballroom.

All of the competitions have been incredibly well supported with excellent entries from dancers attending from very far afield, producing some truly great performances.

The standard of dancing over the three days for the soloists has been quite brilliant and the atmosphere was so good too.

On sight for the whole festival are Dance TV Limited who continue to capture the superb performances and live stream them around the world.

These British Open Solo Championships will without doubt grow considerably large and rather quickly.
