In a significant move towards greater inclusivity, Freedom to Dance is leading the way with a groundbreaking initiative at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool. Collaborating with Step Change Studios, the Open Worlds Dance Competition proudly introduces a category specifically designed for blind and partially sighted adults, marking a pivotal moment in the dance community's efforts towards diversity.
Planned for May 12, 2024, the competition stands as a significant step forward, driven by the dedication of Freedom to Dance, which was founded by Richard Gleave CBE and Anne Gleave in 2010.
Participants in the Blind and Partially Sighted (BPS) category will showcase their skills in a Bronze-level competition, featuring both Latin (Cha Cha, Rumba) and Ballroom (Waltz, Tango) dances. Each participant will be paired with a sighted dancer, nurturing a supportive and inclusive environment.
Rashmi Becker, the visionary behind Step Change Studios, expresses anticipation for the event, acknowledging its transformative potential. "Our students are so excited to have their first ever opportunity to dance at the famous Tower Ballroom thanks to the support of Freedom to Dance, Pauk Killick, Lin Bin of Cimen Shanghai, Terence Lay of the Terence Lay Foundation Hong Kong, Thomas Pocklington Trust, and Ronnie Li from dancewear company Chrisanne Clover. Over the coming days we will be highlighting our thanks to our supporters individually. We would also like to thank Mr. Michael Williams, Managing Director of Blackpool Entertainment Company Ltd and Julie from MEET Blackpool for sourcing the hotel accommodation for our partially sighted participants and volunteers."
Richard Gleave CBE and Anne Gleave reflect on the profound significance of the initiative, emphasising the joy that dance brings to individuals with sight loss. "We have seen firsthand the utter joy that Ballroom and Latin American dancing brings to our blind and partially sighted friends from Step Change Studios. Supporting them on this journey to Blackpool is the pinnacle for Freedom to Dance.”
